چکیده

In the developing embryo the foregut is surrounded by a group of vascular structures of bilateral distribution connected with the branchial arches. Portions of these arches are obliterated to form the normally described aorta and great vessels. The ultimate persistence of only one main vascular arch, the left, as the aorta, permits the trachea and oesophagus to lie freely to its right side. Where, however, the vascular obliteration in the embryo stage is abnormal, the residual vessels may so closely surround the trachea and oesophagus that either or both become compressed and symptoms are produced (Fig. 1). The first description of this anatomical abnormality appears to have been made by Hommel in 1737. Quain in his surgical anatomy (1844) gives the following account:

Stridor in a Newborn with Double Aortic Arch-A Case Report

Introduction: Double aortic arch (DAA) is a congenital anomaly of the aortic arch. It is the most common type of complete vascular ring. When it occurs, the connected segment of the aortic arch and its branches encircle the trachea and esophagus, leading to symptoms related to these two structures. Case Report: We present a case of a newborn baby who developed biphasic stridor immediately after...

Dyspnea in Patient with Arteria Lusoria: A Case Report

Introduction: Arteria lusoria is an aberrant right subclavian artery. In symptomatic cases, patients report dysphagia and only in few cases dyspnea, due to external compression of the trachea and esophagus. Symptoms occur in advanced age and diagnosis is made with chest HRCT, when other causes of dysphagia have been excluded.    Case Report: An 83-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and m...

Typical Asthmatic Presentation of Congenital Vascular Ring Can Masquerade a General Physician

A 24-year-old woman was referred to pulmonologist with worsening breathlessness and wheeze. During childhood, she was diagnosed with asthma and subsequent exacerbations were treated with bronchodilators for many years. The chest X-ray and a spirometry testing raised a doubt of extrinsic tracheal compression and a subsequent enhanced chest CT (computerized tomogram) scan confirmed a right-sided ...

Tracheal signs and associated vascular anomalies in dogs with persistent right aortic arch.

Medical records of 55 dogs with 1 or more vascular rings around the esophagus and trachea were reviewed to determine the nature and frequency of related vascular anomalies and to determine the reliability of tracheal deviation on radiographs for the diagnosis of persistent right aortic arch (PRAA). Fifty-two (95%) of the 55 dogs had PRAA. Of the 52 dogs with PRAA, 44% had coexisting compressive...

Double aortic arches, esophageal atresia and tracheal compression

We report a case of double aortic arch in a 12-month-old male infant well delineated on 64 slice computed tomography scan. It formed a complete vascular ring around the trachea compressing it. The symptoms resolved after surgical division of the ring.
